Ian ‘KMT’ Solomon aka Freedom Teacher artist musician, community activist, Climate Change Engagement and Diversity Project Manager and founder of the May Project Gardens in 2007, from his council house. He wanted to create a legacy for his late mother, whom he’d cared for his whole life, by turning her large derelict garden into a community space which was open to the public.
Seeing how healing this was at a time of immense personal pain, he wanted to mobilise others experiencing personal, social or financial hardship in the city. Thus, the current iteration of May Project Gardens was born.
Over the years, the site has become a tangible example of how people can come together, with limited resources and make a social change at a micro-level. Dozens of local volunteers have worked on the site, helping to make it into a community education site in London recognised safe space.
